Siem Reap Launches Community Tourism Project in Wat Bo Village, Ranked 3rd Most Scenic Village Globally

Siem Reap authorities have launched a new community-based tourism initiative in Wat Bo village, marking the village’s global recognition as the third most beautiful in the world.

This project, aimed at bolstering local tourism, was inaugurated on 20 September 2024 by Mr Yun Linne, Deputy Governor of Siem Reap Province, alongside government officials, local units, and community members. The launch includes developing new tourism experiences centred around the village’s rich cultural heritage and scenic beauty, drawing attention to its historical significance.

Mr Yun Linne noted that in 2022, Wat Bo Village was ranked third on Time Out’s list of the 51 most scenic places globally, a recognition further broadcasted by CNN.

The village, connected deeply to the ancient culture of Siem Reap, boasts the historic Wat Reach Bo temple and a newly constructed museum housing 2,575 artifacts from the prehistoric to post-Angkorian periods. This community initiative will enhance the village’s cultural values, making it a prime destination for both national and international tourists.

In partnership with GIZ and local tour operators, the Siem Reap Provincial Administration has chosen Road 26 in Wat Bo as a pilot site for this project. The goal is to create a sustainable tourism model that preserves the village’s unique traditions while promoting a green, safe, and culturally vibrant environment.

As part of the project’s launch, visitors can enjoy a two-day food exhibition and performances by Cambodian and international artists on 21-22 September 2024 at Sala Kamroeuk commune in Siem Reap.
