Study on Port Development Master Plan Started

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has allowed a group of Chinese experts on ports to conduct a study for a master plan on port development and the waterway system connection in Cambodia.

Port experts from China Merchants Port in southern China’s Shenzhen city, which is the second largest port in China and the third largest port in the world, will conclude the study over next three months.

In a meeting with Jiang Luning, director of Oversea Business of China Merchants Port, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport H.E. Sun Chanthol said that the study focuses on Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh Ports, as well as Cambodia’s maritime inland waterways that connect to the Mekong River.

Nhem Savong, deputy director general of General Department of Waterway-Maritime Transport and Port at Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said that the study will help the country having certain master plan in setting for development and management on ports.

“The master plan, if we study in detail, when we allow port developments requested by the private sector, we will allow to build the port facilities and the size of facilities of the development,” Mr Savong said.

“In some area, we allow them to build port facilities and in other place we allow for bigger-sized facilities,” he added.

Currently, Cambodia has two main ports –Sihanoukville Autonomous Sea Port and Phnom Penh Autonomous Port. Besides these, the government plans to build port facilities along the Mekong River for passenger transport and agricultural product transport.

Five port stations along river from Preak Phnov to Takhmao have been built for passenger transports.

H.E. Sun Chanthol has said that the government will develop the waterway system both in rivers and maritime as well as to build port facilities along the Mekong River to facilitate and enhance the transportation via waterways effectively.
