Techo International Airport Construction Completes First Phase, Set to Open in 2025

The Cambodian government has announced the successful completion of the first phase of construction for the Techo International Airport, located in Takhmao City, Kandal Province, and Takeo Province. The airport is on track for its official opening scheduled for September 9, 2025.

In a recent meeting held by the technical working group, Dr. Mao Havannal, Minister in charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, reviewed the progress of the construction project. The meeting, which took place on July 7, 2025, focused on several key areas, including the status of the construction project, airport certification processes, and preparations for airport operations. Significant developments in air traffic control systems and the ORAT (Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer) plan were also evaluated.

Dr. Havannal emphasized that the progress made thus far signifies a crucial step toward finalizing construction and ensuring a successful opening of the airport in September 2025. He highlighted various components under review, including the international gate works and preparations for the transfer of operations from Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) to Techo International Airport (KTI).

Construction of the Techo International Airport began on June 16, 2020, on a 2,600-hectare site that spans both Kandal Stung District and Bati District. With its inauguration, the existing Por Chen Tong Airport will permanently close, a move supported by Prime Minister Hun Manet, who emphasized that the site will remain state property to serve the public’s interests.
