Thailand Announces New Bridge Project to Strengthen Ties with Cambodia

In a significant move to enhance cross-border connectivity, the Thai government has unveiled plans for a new bridge that will permanently link Chanthaburi province in Thailand with Pailin province in Cambodia. The project, set to cost approximately 15 million baht, aims to boost trade and tourism between the two nations. As reported by the Bangkok Post on November 20, 2024.

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul conducted a site inspection at the Ban Pakkad border crossing in the Pong Nam Rong district, expressing optimism about the bridge’s potential to foster economic growth. He stated that the new structure, named the Chanthaburi-Pailin Friendship Bridge, will replace the existing temporary steel bridge connecting the provinces.

The new concrete bridge will measure around 40 meters in length and 3 meters in width, significantly improving logistics and trade between Thailand and Cambodia. Minister Anutin highlighted the project’s importance in facilitating easier travel and promoting bilateral trade and tourism.

Construction of the bridge is scheduled to commence next year, following the preparation of a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project, which will be submitted to the Thai Cabinet for approval soon. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has already given the initiative his preliminary endorsement, which will be funded through the Thai central budget.

Chanthaburi currently boasts five major border trade points with Cambodia, including two main crossings at Ban Lem and Ban Pak Kad and three local border checkpoints dedicated to trade. This new infrastructure development reinforces the economic ties between the two countries and paves the way for a mutually beneficial future.
