Government Seizes Over 4,000 Hectares of Illegally Owned Land in Kampong Speu

The Kampong Speu Provincial Administration has thus far seized over 4,000 hectares of illegally owned land in three protected areas to be returned to use as national assets, according to the Kampong Speu province work progress report released on 20 July.

The report stated that the three protected areas are the Chambok Community Protected Area (1,641 hectares), eight protected areas in Oral District (2,732 hectares), and the Cardamom National Park (44 hectares).

Kampong Speu Governor H.E Vy Samnang, at a press conference on the progress and direction of the work of the Kampong Speu Province on 20 July said that his authorities have been continuously taking serious action regarding deforestation and encroachment on state land.

“We are doing our best with the relevant officials, including the Ministry of Environment, the Forestry Administration, and the participation of the armed forces. So far, we have seized a huge amount of land back, as stated in the report,” he added.

Regarding the matter of illegally owned land, in early July, the cabinet approved the ‘Draft Law on State Property Management and Use,’ to help strengthen the management of all state assets, including but not limited to land, property, and construction, among others. (Read more)

In early July, Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen also warned that those corrupt officials who illegally obtained their land will be punished heavily, and those illegally issued titles will also be void. (Read more)
