Gov’t Pushes for Railway Expansion MoU by Year-End

The Cambodian government has set a firm deadline for a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the railway expansion project to be finalized before the end of 2024, as announced by Samdech Hun Manet, PM of Cambodia, during the celebration ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Cambodia’s accession to the World Trade Organisation on 14 October 2024.

The PM urged the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Royal Railway of Cambodia to expedite negotiations, emphasizing that resolving the long-standing railway issue is critical for enhancing the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

The railway expansion project forms part of the Royal Government’s broader strategy to prioritize the development of highway systems and railways to bolster the transportation sector.

“I have already given principles to the relevant ministries and company to negotiate on the railway expansion project to reach a memorandum of understanding by the end of this year because the railway issue has been unsolved for years. We need to upgrade,” stated the PM.

Failure to reach a timely agreement could result in the government revoking the project license from the private sector, as the PM issued a warning that underscores the administration’s commitment to advancing infrastructure development.

Royal Railway of Cambodia, which currently manages the nation’s railway system under an investment concession, operates two primary lines: Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh to Poipet.
