Cambodian Gov’t Launches Free Travel Initiative to Boost Tourism in Northeast

The Cambodian government has announced the “Free Northeast Entertainment Program,” which allows citizens to travel for free to the Northeastern provinces of Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, and Ratanakkiri every weekend from September to December 2024.

This initiative, unveiled by PM Hun Manet during the one-year achievements of the Government of the 7th legislature of the National Assembly on 22 August 2024, aims to promote tourism and development in the Northeast region by encouraging citizens to explore the scenic landscapes and observe the progress along Cambodia’s borders.

PM Hun Manet outlined the program as part of a broader strategy to develop the Northeast Zone. The initiative will provide free travel opportunities for Cambodian citizens every weekend to these four provinces, enhancing public access to the country’s diverse natural beauty and fostering greater national unity. The “Free Northeast Entertainment Program” is also intended to increase awareness of the region’s potential for development and investment.

To ensure the smooth execution of this program, the PM has assigned key government officials, including HE Neth Pheaktra, Minister of Information; HE Lam Chea, Minister in Charge of the Secretariat of Border Affairs; and HE Pen Bona, Minister Delegate to the PM and Chairman of the Government Spokesperson Unit. The governors of the four border provinces will also play a crucial role in coordinating the logistics of this initiative to maximise its impact on both local tourism and community engagement.

Additionally, HE Aun Porn Moniroth, Minister of Economy, has been tasked with developing an investment incentive package for the Northeast region. This package is expected to be finalized by the end of 2024, with implementation set to begin in early 2025. This complementary effort aims to attract private sector investment and stimulate economic growth in these provinces, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to regional development.
