The Gov’t Plans to Establish International Standard Laboratory to Prevent Animal Diseases

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has announced plans to establish an international standard laboratory in Sitbo commune, Kandal province, aimed at preventing animal diseases and promoting the safety of animal products.

In a recent meeting on 21 April 2023 to review the project budget, Minister Dith Tina emphasized the importance of setting up all sub-sector laboratories in one place for convenience and to ensure good operation. The Sitbo commune location was chosen due to its favorable position in avoiding potential risks that could affect nearby towns.

The laboratory will focus on strengthening the capacity to inspect the safety and hygiene of animal products in Cambodia, particularly with regard to diseases caused by food, contamination, germs, and chemicals, as well as pharmaceutical waste in animal products.

Minister Tina has established a working group to review the detailed inventory, budget, equipment/materials, and human resources with the participation of relevant units to ensure the laboratory’s success.

While the laboratory has not yet taken shape, Minister Tina advised officers to continue to work and begin thinking at the regional level, with good cooperation between the main and regional laboratories being essential. The construction of the national laboratory is expected to contribute to promoting national well-being by providing safe animal products and exporting animal products.

The new laboratory will serve as an essential resource for the food sector, promoting a high level of safety and preventing the spread of animal diseases and other infectious diseases. The establishment of an international standard laboratory will be a crucial step forward for Cambodia’s agricultural sector, ensuring the country’s ability to maintain high levels of food safety and meet international standards.
