New Economic Pole to Help Strengthen Cambodia-Thailand Border Trade Partners

Cambodia has revealed its plans to create a fourth economic pole along the Cambodian-Thai border, aiming to boost economic growth and trade in the agricultural sector. The announcement was made by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, HE Minister Dit Tina, during a meeting with HE Cherdkiat Atthakor, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Thailand, on 10 March 2023. 

The proposed economic pole will span four Cambodian provinces, including Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, and Pailin, and will require real and sustainable trading partners to succeed. The initiative has already received support from Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Samdech Hun Sen, who announced the plan during a meeting with HE Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, in February 2023. 

Samdech Hun Sen emphasised that the new economic pole would be located in the Northwest Zone, which is heavily dependent on the fish and rice industries. The establishment of the economic pole is expected to strengthen border trade partnerships between Cambodia and Thailand and stimulate economic growth in the region. (Read more)
