Stung Toch Drainage Rehabilitation Project in Kampong Speu Reaches 89% Completion

The rehabilitation of the Stung Toch drainage system in Kampong Speu province has achieved approximately 89% completion, as reported by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MoWRM)  on 1 September 2024.

This significant project includes rehabilitating a 51-kilometre-long small river, with a mouth width of 100 metres and a 40-metre-high dam. The river stretches 12.5 kilometres through Kampong Speu and extends 38.5 kilometres into Kandal province.

The project’s key elements include the construction and repair of 68 artistic structures, along with an 8-metre-high dam that spans 51 metres in width and 300 metres in length. Five sluice gates, each measuring 8.5 metres in width and 7.5 metres in height, are also under construction. These works are integral to the broader Stung Prek Tnaot water system project, which is nearly 95% complete. (Read more)

As part of the water release and diversion efforts, the sub-project will redirect water from the Stung Prek Tnaot River at a rate of 300 cubic metres per second. The water will flow through Kampong Speu and Kandal provinces before reaching Tonle Bati in Takeo and eventually flowing into Tonle Bassac.

This initiative forms part of the ministry’s comprehensive three-phase water drainage and diversion system for Phnom Penh and surrounding areas. The first and second phases focus on rehabilitating 10 rivers and canals, totalling 260 kilometres, and the construction of 366 essential structures, including pumping stations powered by 27 motors and one dam (sluice gate) across four locations.

These projects are a critical part of Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to improve water management and infrastructure across the region.
