Cambodia’s First Concrete-Floored Historical Canal 260km in Length Reaches 76% Completion

The Cambodian government is nearing the completion of a historic 260-kilometre canal project, set to be the first in the country to feature a concrete pavement at its bottom. Construction has reached 76.77% completion. This significant milestone was highlighted by PM Hun Manet during an inspection of the Stung Prek Tnaot irrigation system on 14 June 2024.

PM Hun Manet noted that this canal project marks a historic first for Cambodia, providing a modern technical standard for infrastructure development. The canal is designed not only to manage water diversion from Phnom Penh but also to mitigate flooding for over 300,000 hectares of farmland, residential areas, and industrial zones in Phnom Penh, Kandal, and Kampong Speu provinces.

Additionally, the canal is expected to ensure adequate water supply for irrigation, benefiting more than 500,000 hectares of agricultural fields during the rainy season. As of mid-June, the project’s progress has reached approximately 76%, with completion expected by the end of August 2024.
