Cambodia’s Industrial & Agricultural Sectors Receive Special Electricity Discounts to Boost Production

The Ministry of Mines and Electricity of Cambodia, in conjunction with the Electricity Authority of Cambodia, has announced a significant reduction in electricity prices for industrial and agricultural consumers nationwide. This strategic move aims to stimulate the expansion of production, factories, and enterprises, ultimately generating employment opportunities and income for the population. This initiative was disclosed in a press release dated 29 September 2023.

Under the new policy, particular attention is given to consumers connected to medium-voltage and high-voltage networks. This includes mid-range electricity consumers, time-and-power consumers, and those utilising solar panels. The implementation is based on national network performance exceeding the monthly average of the last six months.

In addition to the discount rates, the government has outlined the following provisions:

  • A 10% discount for average monthly energy consumption from Monday to Saturday between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
  • A generous 20% discount on monthly average energy consumption from Monday to Saturday between 9 pm and 7 am, as well as 24 hours on Sundays and public holidays.

This preferential pricing window aims to encourage increased consumption within these pivotal sectors and will span three months from October to December 2023. The specific duration will be confirmed through 30 days’ advance notices, aligned with the practical feasibility of Electricite du Cambodge.

Industrial and agricultural customers connected to medium and high voltage networks should initiate the process by contacting their local electricity supplier. These customers can demonstrate their intent to expand consumption and access the benefits offered.

It’s essential to note that residential electricity consumers served by state-owned commercial entities will not be eligible for these discounts, as they already receive subsidies from the government.

This strategic decision to lower electricity prices is poised to invigorate Cambodia’s industrial and agricultural sectors, fostering growth and development.
