US wants airports for Boeing aircraft to land in Cambodia

The United States, through its ambassador to Cambodia, has expressed its intention to invest in and promote Cambodia’s aviation sector by proposing a number of major proposals, including the proposal for the use of Boeing airports in Cambodia, the ratification for Cambodian membership in the Cape Town Convention, and the strengthening of the US-Cambodia air agreement.

The remarks were discussed earlier this week during a meeting and courtesy call between H.E Mao Havannal, Secretary of State for Civil Aviation and US Ambassador to Cambodia, W. Patrick Murphy, on strengthening future cooperation in the civil aviation sector between the two countries.

Regarding the use of Boeing airplanes in Cambodia, HE Mao Havannal expressed his welcome and asked the Boeing company to cooperate and present their plans to serviced users in Cambodia. He also expressed his personal interest that he also enjoys traveling with Boeing, especially the B777.

Regarding the proposal for the Cape Town Convention, HE Mao Havannal requested the Ambassador to provide consultants and technical assistance in the process. As for air deals with the United States, he reminded the US Ambassador that there have been negotiations since 2014.

On the pending issues regarding the proposed landing service, he highlighted that American companies should directly consult with BOT Airport Investments. The Cambodian Civil Aviation is waiting to facilitate both parties.

In response, the US ambassador said he would urge US airlines to meet directly with the Cambodia Airports Investment companies and arrange a contact to the Secretariat of Civil Aviation and provide technical assistance for ratification of the Cape Town Convention.

In response to the request for knowledge on the conditions for airplane landing, HE Mao Havannal reported on the civil aviation sector in Cambodia, especially during COVID-19 and in particular that construction processes still retained some normal operations.

He also mentioned the importance of the construction of new major international airports due to the fact that: 1, Phnom Penh International Airport is too narrow and unfavourably, close to the city. Secondly, Siem Reap International Airport is also very narrow, especially near the Angkor Wat temple, which is protected by UNESCO. Thirdly, for Sihanoukville International Airport, the Secretariat of Civil Aviation would like SCA / VINCI to invest in 4E expansion. The project will be completed in October 2022.
