US$15 million rice storage facility opens in Battambang Province

State-owned bank Rural Development Bank (RDB) inaugurated Cambodia’s biggest rice warehouse and drying facility on 3 July in Battambang Province according to the official post on Facebook.

The warehouse is capable of stocking 200,000 tons of paddy rice while the drying facility can process up to 3,000 tons of rice daily. Built at a cost of US$15 million, the rice facilities have been constructed under the Build-Operate-Payment (B.O.P) scheme between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Cambodian Rice Bank.

According to the secretary of state at the Ministry of Economy and Finance Chou Kimleng, the new facilities can reduce the cost of harvesting the rice and reduce the role of brokers, which can increase the benefits for farmers by raising the price of rice harvested from the fields.

Speaking during the inauguration, Kao Thach, chief executive of Rural Development Bank (RDB) said that the facilities are aimed at ensuring the stability of the rice price as well as improving the livelihoods of rice farmers.

Acknowledging the success of the rice facility, farmers have benefited from the project whereby the price was guaranteed by the market price and not decreasing as in the previous year, he added.

The Cambodian Rice Bank won the bid for the project in early 2017.
