US$7.2b Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway Set to Revolutionize Indonesian Transport

Indonesia is set to mark its 78th Independence Day with the opening of the highly anticipated Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, a landmark project that will connect the capital to the thriving city of Bandung in just 40 minutes. The US$7.2 billion railway, a flagship initiative of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, has been years in the making and is being spearheaded by the Indonesian-Chinese consortium PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC).

According to Luhut Panjaitan, Indonesia’s coordinating minister for maritime and investment affairs, the project is nearing completion and will begin trial runs by the end of May.

“The trial run will start by the end of May at the latest and it will be good to go. We expect to start operating on 18 August 2023, as a gift for the 78th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence,” said Luhut.

The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway will cover a distance of 142 kilometers and will revolutionize transport in Indonesia by reducing travel time between the two cities from three hours to just 40 minutes. This will greatly enhance connectivity and support economic growth, making it an attractive prospect for investors and businesses alike.

The railway project has faced numerous delays and cost overruns, but with the finish line now in sight, it is expected to be a game-changer for Indonesia’s transport infrastructure. The August opening of the railway will mark a major milestone in Indonesia’s journey towards a more connected and prosperous future.
