Cambodia’s Water & Sanitation Transformation: World Bank-Funded Project Reaches 36% Completion

In a significant step towards enhancing water supply and sanitation across Cambodia, a project supported by a US$55 million loan from the World Bank has reached an impressive 36.36% completion as of October 2023. The remarkable progress was the focal point of the meeting held on 6 November 2023, chaired by HE Dr. Ros Vanna, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

The overarching objective of this project is to revamp water supply and sanitation infrastructure throughout the country. The US$55 million credit financing, backed by the Cambodian government, underscores the importance of developing comprehensive sewerage and sub-sewerage networks, ensuring public health, and sanitation, and fostering a cleaner environment to enhance the quality of life for the people.

This ambitious project is segmented into two major components, each designed to tackle critical issues. The first part is focused on elevating the standards of wastewater quality from treatment plants, enhancing wastewater service pricing mechanisms, and streamlining wastewater service fees. It also entails revamping water billing and bolstering service quality. The second facet involves the meticulous management of wastewater from toilets, among other critical aspects. (Read more)

During the recent meeting, the secretary of state emphasized the critical importance of adherence to technical standards and the need for construction companies and project consultants to allocate keen attention to these standards. The clear directive aims to ensure the project remains on track for successful completion, with an additional focus on increasing the implementation rate to reach the targeted 66%.

The progression of this project signifies a substantial stride towards transforming water and sanitation infrastructure across Cambodia, addressing crucial challenges, and enhancing the well-being of the population.
