World Bank’s Sustainable Move: US$163m Pledged for Water & Sanitation Advancements in Four Cambodian Provinces

In a landmark decision, the World Bank has greenlit a groundbreaking US$163 million initiative aimed at fortifying water and sanitation services across four pivotal provinces in Cambodia—Battambang, Pursat, Mondulkiri, and Kandal. This transformative project, spanning six years, is poised to directly impact over 175,000 individuals, primarily benefiting the marginalised and underserved populations in rural areas.

Maria Salim, World Bank Country Manager for Cambodia, emphasised the far-reaching impact of this support, stating, “This support will help the government build a strong foundation for providing these essential services to the people of Cambodia, and it will bring immediate benefits to women and the poor in rural areas who do not currently have access to these services.”

The Water Supply and Sanitation Acceleration Project will play a pivotal role in the government’s strategy to enhance access to clean water and sanitation. Beyond immediate improvements, the initiative will focus on optimising the efficiency and sustainability of existing water and sanitation systems, ensuring long-term benefits for the communities involved.

One of the standout features of the project involves a strategic partnership with private water supply operators. These operators, already contributing over half of all pipelines in Cambodia, are expected to mobilise approximately US$17.6 million from private sources. This collaboration aims to expand water supply networks and maximize financial investments for overall development.
