Environment ministry gives green light to Cambodia Cement Chakrey Ting Factory in Kampot

The Ministry of Environment (MoE) gave the green light on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) on 23 July for the Cambodia Cement Chakrey Ting Factory in Kampot.

Cambodia Cement Chakrey Ting Factory was initiated in 2014 with a US$100 million investment in Phnom Teach Village, Kandal Commune, Teuk Chhou District, Kampot Province covering an area of 32 hectares. The plant has the capacity to produce 1.22 million tons of cement annually.

The Ministry of Environment, as posted on its Facebook page, said it supported the project after reviewing the ESIA report conducted by consulting firm SBK Research and Development Co., Ltd.

According to Ministry of Environment spokesperson H.E Neth Pheaktra, the ESIA report is conducted every 10 years, but there are some projects not yet been studied that will need to be.

As reported, the ESIA concluded with:
1) Supporting the establishment of the cement plant (Chakrey Ting)
2) Requesting the company to plant more trees around the project site
3) Requesting the company to manage the usage of groundwater
4) Ensuring the company properly manage liquid-solid waste and establish liquid waste treatment systems
5) Requesting the company to equip air monitoring devices and particle detectors for the ash
6) Ensuring the company has adequate safety equipment for employees and workers, and a schedule to check the health of employees and workers
7) Ensuring compliance on product delivery to comply with technical standards and driving must comply with traffic laws
8) Requesting the company to review the establishment of environmental and social funds.

Cambodia currently has four cement factories with a capacity to produce about 7 million tons of cement each year. These include Kampot Cement, Cambodia Cement Chakrey Ting Factory Co, Ltd, Chip Mong Insee Cement Corporation, and Battambang Conch Cement Co Ltd. (Read more)
