Eu Bank Provides Close to Us$100 Million to Build Clean Water Plant in Phnom Penh

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided a loan of €85.9 million (about US$$96.14 million) to the Royal Government of Cambodia for the construction of a water treatment plant northern Phnom Penh’s Bakheng area.

The concessional loan agreement was signed by the European Investment Bank with the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority in Brussels, Belgium, on June 18 to improve supply for clean water consumption in and around the Phnom Penh capital.

The project will also be supported by a grant of €13.5 million (about US$15.25
million) from the European Investment Fund of the European Union and with the support of the French Agency for Development (AFD) for the connection of water networks to poor people, living in the suburbs and living in the city to ensure that everyone has equal access to clean water.

The financing will increase the capacity of 71 billion cubic meters of water a year and expand the water pipeline distribution networks for 2.5 million people in Phnom Penh.
Through this financing, it will enable the construction of the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant located in the northern suburb of Phnom Penh, with water sources located on the west bank of the Mekong River.

The Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority is the implementing agency of the project and is a lender from the Cambodian government, according to the press release.

H.E. Sim Sitha, director-general of the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA), said that the support enables the PPWSA to respond to demographic and economic growth at a high level, especially in neighboring areas.
