Expansion of Sihanouk Airport to Be Complete in 2022

The expansion of the runway at Sihanouk International Airport is scheduled to be complete before the end of 2022 to handle the long-haul aircraft of world leaders who will attend the ASEAN Summit in Cambodia’s Preah Sihanoukville province.

Mr Sin Chansereyvutha, spokesperson at the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), said that for handling landings of long-haul aircraft, the expansion of the runway and the building of a new terminal planned.

Currently, the first stage of the runway expansion is underway, being expanded from the current 2,500 to 2,800 metres, Mr Sin said. As planned, the runway will be expanded to 3,300 metres in the second stage.

He added that besides the expansion of the runway, a new airport terminal of the airport will be built in line with increasing arrivals of tourists in the province.

Mr Sin explained that the first stage of development will be completed in 2020.

“The expansion of the runway is currently underway. The development is divided in stages and beside the runway expansion, a new terminal facility will be built,” he told Construction & Property Magazine.

According to Mr Sin, the runway expansion will be competed to handle Code E aircraft like the Boeing 777s used by world leaders to attend the ASEAN summit in 2022.
