Gov’t Invests US$1.34 Billion in Loans, 64% to Infrastructure in 2022

The Cambodian government withdrew US$1.34 billion from concessional loans in 2022, with 64% of the amount being utilised for infrastructure development, according to the Cambodian Public Debt Statistics Bulletin.  

The funds were allocated to various infrastructure sectors; US$446 million for transportation, US$105 million for energy, US$138 million for irrigation and US$68 million for water supply, and US$103 million for other infrastructure. 

Compared to the same period in 2021, total cash withdrawals increased by approximately 15%. In addition, the government signed new concessional loan agreements with development partners in 2023, amounting to US$2,137 million, which represents a year-on-year increase of 136%. 

As of Q4 2022, Cambodia’s total public debt was US$9.99 billion, with US$9.97 billion in foreign debt and US$17.51 million in domestic debt. The government’s investments in infrastructure are expected to continue to grow in the coming years, providing opportunities for the country’s economic development. 

The Cambodian government’s investment in infrastructure is crucial to the country’s development, particularly in attracting foreign investment and improving the quality of life of its citizens.
