Increasing Capacity of Water Treatment in Sihanouk City Approved

Inter-ministries have agreed to upgrade capacity of 4 wastewater treatments in Preah Sihanoukville province from 25,000 cubic meter to 30,000 cubic meter aiming to restore environment in the province.

The upgrading of capacity of wastewater treatment is scheduled to be completed ahead of 2022, when Preah Sihanoukville province hosts ASEAN Summit.

Besides upgrading the capacity of wastewater treatment, building system of drains and equipping material in the wastewater system in the city are also in plan to be build.

In press statement issued by Ministry of Economy and Finance issued on May 23, the upgrading the capacity of wastewater treatment was made in the inter-ministry meeting on facing issue and wastewater solution in Sihanouk city.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Land Management and Urban Planning and Construction, Ministry of Public Works and Transports, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Tourism, Council for Development of Cambodia, and Preah Sihanoukville municipal.

Under government’s development policy, Sihanouk city has a fast development with remarkable growth of economic activities, particularly the growth in industry and tourism, which causes the liquid-solid wastes increase, stated the statement.

With existing facilities cannot support with increase of waste and smaller rainwater reservoir, a part of wastewater flow into the sea causing impact to environment, the statement read.

However, the statement did not attach the amount of budget to be used in upgrading the capacity of water treatment.

But according to H.E. Sun Chanthol, senior minister and minister of Public Works and Transports, said in late of April that some US$200 million is needed to implement the project to build 60,000 cubic meter water treatment. (Read more)
