Instant noodle manufacturing factory inaugurated

An instant noodle manufacturing factory equipped with technology from Japan was inaugurated on Saturday 02 November in Phnom Penh and hopes Cambodians will support it by wanting to promote locally-produced products.

Invested by One More Manufacturing Co Ltd, the instant noodle factory producing Mee Chiet noodles is located in Kok Rokar commune, Pur Senchey district.

Mee Chiet instant noodles come in three different flavours: –beef, pork, and chicken. Speaking at the ceremony, Choeung Sokuntheavy, Director of One More Manufacturing, said that the instant noodle is being produced to meet the demand of Cambodian people and that the production chain is based on the modern technology from Japan. The investment amount and capacity of production chain were not disclosed.

“This is a very appropriate time that Cambodia should have factories producing food domestically to supply demand to the population of 16 million and reduce food supply chains from abroad,” Ms Sokuntheavy said. She called for support for locally-produced products made by Cambodian people.

Um Sotha, spokesman at the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft, said on Sunday that the instant noodle sector in Cambodia has significantly grown. He said the new instant noodle factory shows the demand for instant noodles in the market which is currently dependent on imports.

“Because of demand for instant noodles surging, the local production should focus on quality to compete in the market. If quality is strengthened and improved, I think locally-produced instant noodle products are able to compete with imported instant noodles,” Mr Sotha said.

Currently, existing local instant noodle production has been in operation since 2010 by Mee Yoeng instant noodle producer, but it has been less popular among consumers compared to imported instant noodles.
