The government has issued a sub-decree establishing two new districts on nearby islands. Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanleum are one district with Koh Rong designated as a city. The establishment of Koh Rong city comes as both islands become a hub for national and international tourists.

The establishment of new city was promulgated on 19 May in the presence of H.E Yun Min, governor of Preah Sihanoukville, according to a post of the province’s Facebook page. The new city will join the Preah Sihanoukville as the second city in the province.

Speaking at the ceremony, H.E Yun Min said Koh Rong city is a potential tourism area with beautiful beaches, unpolluted seawater, and covered by natural forest. He went on to say that its potential has put Koh Rong island on the map as a relaxing place for holiday.

“The future of Koh Rong City will be further better, and it is a place attracting tourists from the world,” Mr Yun Min said.

With 700 residents, Koh Rong City is about 36 kilometres offshore and a 30-minute boat ride from Preah Sihanoukville.
