Japan Aiming to Help Cambodia Solve Urban Environmental Problems

Approximately 58 Japanese companies from various segments of the construction and real estate sector have met with Cambodian partners to seek investment opportunities in infrastructure and urbanisation to help Cambodia solve its urban environmental problems.

The initiative was announced at the 1st Meeting of Public-Private Platform for “Urban Development, Cambodia-Japan” held on 27 February 2019 at the Cambodiana Hotel.

H.E Chea Sophara, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) said that this event aimed to create business and investment opportunities from Japan to Cambodia on the development of real estate, residential construction, business services, industry, infrastructure, and urban environmental problems.

Speaking in front of 300 attendees, H.E Yuki Fumihiko, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) of Japan said that the purpose of Japan’s cooperation with Cambodia is to prevent Cambodia from experiencing problems that Japan has had in the past.

“When Japan’s economy grew rapidly, Japan faced some of the challenges including housing problems, traffic congestion and environmental problems,” he said.

“We will use the latest technologies like Smart City and AI technology to address current urbanisation issues,” he added.

“The forum is held at the right time for Cambodia where urbanisation is progressing rapidly, and cooperation among all relevant parties and solutions for urban environmental problems are important for promoting the wellbeing and happiness of the Cambodian people,” said H.E Bessho Kenichi, Minister of the Japanese Embassy in Cambodia.

This forum was attended by representatives of relevant ministries and institutions such as the Cambodian Constructors Association (CCA), Cambodian Valuers & Estate Agents (CVEA), Housing Development Association of Cambodia (HDAC), Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, Board of Engineers Cambodia (BEC), Board of Architects Cambodia (BAC) and 125 Cambodian companies and 58 Japanese companies totaling to around to 300 people.

Meanwhile, on 26 February 2019, Cambodia and Japan signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the establishment of a private-public forum on the development of infrastructure and urbanisation.
