Japan’s Generosity Paves the Way for Progress: Over US$420k Granted for Vital Projects in 3 Cambodian Provinces

In a gesture of strong bilateral ties, the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia has allocated a generous sum of US$424,907 to kickstart pivotal projects across three provinces. The signing ceremony for the Small-Scale Human Security Project (Kusanoni Grant) on 14 November 2023, marked the commencement of these transformative initiatives.

The Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan, Mr Taninai Uchitomo, outlined the significant impact of this assistance on three essential projects. Firstly, the Thnal Dach Irrigation Rehabilitation Project in Oddar Meanchey province, with a budget of US$119,424, aims to restore and enhance existing irrigation systems, benefiting around 1,000 residents by ensuring a stable water supply for year-round agriculture.

Secondly, the Bridge Construction Project in Kampong Leng district, Kampong Chhnang province, with a budget of US$137,207, targets the construction of a new concrete bridge to replace the deteriorated current structure. This endeavor is poised to benefit approximately 10,000 local inhabitants, providing safe and reliable daily travel access.

The third initiative involves the Bridge Construction Project in O’Mreas commune, Siem Bok district, Stung Treng province, with a budget of US$168,276. The grant will fund the construction of a new concrete bridge, replacing a worn-out wooden structure that has posed risks to the community. Approximately 2,800 people across four villages stand to benefit from enhanced safety and secure access to schools, markets, and health centers throughout the year.

Mr Taninai expressed his optimism that these grants would significantly improve the quality of life for residents in each project location while fostering stronger bonds between Japan and Cambodia.

This move follows Japan’s commitment to furthering development through the Small-Scale Human Security Project, evident in their earlier grant of US$348,919 for education and clean water initiatives across provinces, including Kampong Speu, Kampong Thom, and Mondulkiri. (Read more)
