Japan Extends Nearly US$200m in Funding for Rural Road Enhancement and Clean Water Expansion in Siem Reap

The Government of Japan has demonstrated its commitment to improving infrastructure and living conditions in Cambodia by granting nearly US$200 million in concessional loans. The official signing ceremony, held on 20th June 2023, marked the exchange of letters and related documents, solidifying Japan’s support for rural road enhancement and water supply expansion projects in Siem Reap.

One of the key initiatives receiving financial backing is the Rural Road Connectivity Project, which will receive a loan totaling 23,692 million yen (equivalent to approximately US$172.93 million). This funding injection aims to improve the connectivity and accessibility of rural roads, ensuring smoother transportation routes for communities and fostering economic development in the province.

Furthermore, Japan has allocated a significant portion of the funding, amounting to 2,081 million yen (approximately US$15.18 million), for the implementation of the “Siem Reap Water Supply Capacity Expansion Project Phase III.” This project focuses on expanding clean water accessibility in Siem Reap, addressing the growing demand and enhancing the water supply infrastructure to cater to the needs of the local population.

The generous contribution from the Government of Japan will undoubtedly have a transformative impact on the lives of the people in Siem Reap. Improved rural road connectivity will facilitate greater mobility and unlock economic opportunities, while the expansion of clean water supply will ensure the well-being and health of the community. This collaboration between Cambodia and Japan signifies a shared commitment to sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for all.
