Japan installs full-scale mechanical screen in Phnom Penh

Japan has installed a full-scale mechanical screen (waste drainage machine)as part of the Phase 4 flood prevention and drainage improvement projects in Phnom Penh, according to the JICA Cambodia Office’s Facebook page on 3 June 2020.

This full-scale mechanical screen is an automated mechanical system that helps collect garbage at the entrance of sewage in four pumping stations in Phnom Penh, which were built in Phase 2 of the project by the Japanese government.

Prior to installation of the mechanical screen, to remove the trapped garbage, someone had to be physically sent into the pit to manually clear the garbage.

However, this new screen will be able to eliminate the garbage automatically and transfer the removed garbage by mechanical equipment without using manpower.

This machine will help maintain the sewage system in the city, provide for safer operations and protect the water environment by removing garbage from the sewage system.

Ground was broken on the fourth phase of the project on 4 March 2019 which is being funded by the Japanese Government for an amount of US$36 million. (Read more)
