Japan Pledges Nearly $700,000 to Accelerate Cluster Munition Clearance and Reconstruction in Stung Treng

Ambassador Ueno Atsushi signs a vital grant agreement with JMAS to remove unexploded remnants and pave the way for safe community development

The Government of Japan has officially announced a significant grant totaling nearly $700,000 to bolster cluster munition clearance efforts in Stung Treng province.

According to a press release from the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia dated February 4, 2026, this funding is specifically designated to address the lingering threat of unexploded ordnance that continues to impact local safety and development.

The grant agreement, amounting to $665,186, was signed during a ceremony presided over by His Excellency Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Cambodia, alongside representatives from the recipient institution. This financial support is dedicated to the “Project for Reconstruction with Cluster Munition Clearance in Stung Treng Province,” commonly referred to as the PRCS project.

The initiative will be implemented through the Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS), an organization renowned for its expertise in mine and UXO clearance. By removing hazardous cluster munitions, the project aims to ensure the safety of residents and facilitate the reconstruction of essential infrastructure. This contribution highlights Japan’s enduring commitment to humanitarian action and its steadfast partnership in supporting Cambodia’s long-term recovery and prosperity. (read more)
