Japan Provides Over US$300k to Support Education & Disabilities Sector in Cambodia

The Government of Japan provides a sum of over US$300,000 to three institutions in Cambodia for the implementation of rural education and rehabilitation programs.

This announcement was made following signing of a grant agreement between HE Ou Noo Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, and representatives of the three beneficiaries on the afternoon of 6 March.

Under the terms of the agreement, a grant of US$120,768 was awarded to the Oddar Meanchey Provincial Department of Education, Youth, and Sports to construct a five-room school building with essential school furniture at the local Rumduol Primary School in Banteay Ampil. This initiative is expected to enhance the quality of education for approximately 220 students and nine teachers.

Additionally, US$91,000 was provided to the Kratie Provincial Department of Education, Youth, and Sports to construct a school building at Phnom Rol Primary School in Prek Prosop district. The new facility will comprise five classrooms, one toilet, and three classrooms fully equipped with school furniture, and will cater to a total of 266 students and seven teachers.

Furthermore, more than US$89,000 has been allocated to purchase 11 machines for the production of prosthetics and physical therapy equipment at the National Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Handicapped in Phnom Penh. This allocation will benefit around 900 people each year who require prosthetics, satellites, or rehabilitation services at the centre.

The Small-Scale Human Security Project, also known as Kusanoni Grant, has been providing over US$300,000 in grants since 1991. As a result, the Japanese government has disbursed over US$66 million and implemented 702 projects across Cambodia.

This recent allocation of funds by the Japanese government signifies a positive step towards uplifting the lives of Cambodian citizens through education and rehabilitation, thereby promoting human security and fostering strong bilateral ties between Japan and Cambodia.
