Japan Strengthens Cambodia’s Infrastructure with New Aid Package of Over USD 446K

In a significant move to bolster infrastructure development in Cambodia, the Japanese government has announced a generous aid package totalling USD 446,801 for three critical projects focusing on irrigation systems and bridge construction.

HE Ueno Atsushi, Japan’s Ambassador to Cambodia, officially signed the grant agreement on 30th January alongside representatives from the three beneficiary institutions under the Grant Assistance Plan for Small-Scale Human Security Projects, commonly known as Kusanone.

Among the highlighted projects, a substantial amount, valued at USD 180,396, is earmarked for rehabilitating the irrigation system in Takeo Province. This initiative, executed by the Takeo Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology, aims to ensure a reliable water supply for agricultural pursuits, ultimately elevating local farmers’ living standards and income.

In addition, the Kampong Thom Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport will oversee the construction of a new concrete bridge over a river in Kampong Thom Province, funded by USD 154,353 from the Japanese government. This infrastructure improvement is expected to enhance connectivity and accessibility for the region’s residents.

Furthermore, a grant of USD 112,052 is dedicated to the Khvao commune administration in Siem Reap province to replace an ageing wooden bridge with a modern concrete structure. This upgrade will significantly improve the transportation of agricultural products and ensure safer travel for locals to vital facilities, including schools, markets, and health centres.

Since 1991, Japan has steadfastly committed to supporting Cambodia’s development, contributing over USD 70 million towards 694 Kusanone projects in collaboration with local authorities and NGOs.

Today’s signing marks yet another step in fostering lasting partnerships between Japan and Cambodia, with a shared vision for sustainable growth and community welfare.
