S.Korea Contributes US$10M for Demining Project in Three Cambodian Provinces

South Korea has provided US$10 million to Cambodia for the fourth phase of demining projects (2021-2025) in three provinces, according to His Excellency Senior Minister Ly Thuch, First Vice President of the Mine Authority, on March 20, 2023.

The project, called Demining for Success, was launched in 2006 and has cleared a total of 322.87 square kilometers of landmines, benefiting more than one million rural people, half of whom are women and girls. The contribution from South Korea will allow Cambodia to continue demining in Battambang, Pailin, and Banteay Meanchey provinces, potentially saving lives and contributing to poverty reduction and improved livelihoods for locals.

The Mine Action for Results project has reached the fourth phase with financial support from the Royal Government of Cambodia, Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, and the United Nations Development Programme. Additionally, the Cambodian government contributes 10% to the demining project for annual results.

Cambodia recently announced that it has cleared ten mine-affected areas, and only 15 provinces remain threatened by landmines, highlighting the progress being made by demining projects. The demining efforts will help protect the population from the dangers of landmines and improve the safety and well-being of communities in affected areas. (Read more)
