Land Minister: Illegal construction Activities Significantly Reduced After Enforcement of Construction Law

The construction sector in Cambodia has been improved with fewer illegal activities found after the implementation of the construction law in 2019, according to Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction HE Chea Sophara during a meeting with JICA Chief Representative Kamei Haruko on 16 December.

Minister Chea Sophara said three sub-sectors in the construction industry have seen a remarkable change, thanks to the cooperation with the Japanese government.

“Before and after the construction law, the construction industry environment is completely different. First, illegal construction activities have reduced significantly. Second, the number of registered engineers and architects have increased by more than double. Lastly, more and more construction companies have registered with the ministry as they are more confident in the government,” said HE Chea Sophara.

“These achievements would not happen without the support from the Japanese government. Through JICA, Japan has been helping to draft the law on construction since 2017 and until now still helps promote the implementation and enforce of the law,” he added.’

The construction law was officially promulgated on 3 November 2019, with a total of 22 chapters and 111 articles.
