Larger security gates on buildings urged for tackling fire

The Ministry of Interior has urged architectural designers to carefully look at fire precautions when designing buildings by keeping more significant space for security gates to prevent fire accidents and to facilitate escapes and fire team intervention.

The remarks were made after a study report shows that some building construction which is under construction and in operation in Cambodia have no security gates for escapes when the event of fire happens, according to a post on the ministry’s Facebook page.

Ouk Kim Lek, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Interior said in a workshop on 12 August that due to the growth of development in all sectors, infrastructure, construction, skyscrapers, houses, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, entertainment places, factories, enterprises, petroleum stations and modern houses have boomed in urban and rural areas.

“After research and studies, reports show that some skyscrapers which are under construction and in operation in Cambodia have no security gates for escapes,” H.E. Ouk Kim Lek said.

Additionally, H.E. Ouk Kim Lek urged those buildings to be equipped with prevention material for intervening once events of unexpected fire happen.

All buildings also must be equipped with sirens alerting and informing residents and neigbours of unexpected accidents he said.
