MISTI Announces USD 185 Million Water Supply & Sanitation Expansion Project

The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MISTI) has launched a USD 184.9 million project over the next five years to bolster Cambodia’s water supply and sanitation services.

This major initiative, designed to meet increasing demand and accelerate progress towards the UN’s sustainable development goals for clean water and sanitation by 2030, is expected to be a game changer for both urban and rural areas.

The project, announced in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, will be supported by USD 163 million in concessional financing from the World Bank, along with USD 4.3 million from the Cambodian government and USD 17.6 million from private sector investments.

The project’s first phase will focus on constructing a new water supply system in Sen Monorom, Pursat, and Battambang, including Phnom Proek District in Battambang province. This effort will significantly expand access to clean water in these regions. Private water operators in Pursat and Battambang will also benefit from technical and financial assistance to enhance water delivery services for local communities.

Moreover, the ministry is closely working with the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, along with development partners and private water operators, to mitigate the impacts of climate change, which has increasingly caused water resource losses. Furthermore, collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport ensures that infrastructure projects, such as road developments, do not compromise the efficiency and sustainability of clean water networks.
