Ministry Prepares Law on Fire Safety and Building Structures

In response to the steadily increasing number of buildings and to ensure construction quality and safety, the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC), is developing a new law focusing on building structures and fire safety issues, according to H.E Lao Tip Seiha, Secretary of State of the MLMUPC on 06 June at the Cambodia Architect and Decor Exhibition at the Diamond Island Exhibition Centre.

“The ministry is preparing a new construction law. Overall, for the quality of construction and construction law, we first strengthen two sections, the first is building structures and the second is fire safety issue,” he said.

Mr Bernard Mak, Director of fire equipment supplier and consultant firm MAXTRAD, welcomed the new law.

“This is fantastic, but it will be great if we have information on what will they be focusing about since it is very wide scope,” he said.

In addition to this new law, H.E Lao Tip Seiha also said that the ministry is having up to 32 legal standards including a royal decree, sub-decree, Prakas, and an inter-ministry Prakas.

“The ministry’s skilled senior officials are reviewing, writing, and preparing in order to catch up to the development of the construction sector in Cambodia. And I hope that in the coming year, the legal and regulatory framework for construction that I have just mentioned will be implemented soon.,” he said.

Cambodia does not have a regulated fire code; a lot of firefighting system implementation in high-rise buildings either does not meet safety level standards or is wrongly designed. (Read more)
