Authorities call Preah Sihanouk construction site owners to public meeting on safety

The Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) in collaboration with the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Administration have held a public meeting on construction safety and quality with around 195 construction site owners attending, according to the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Administration.

During the 4 December meeting, H.E Lao Tip Seiha, Secretary of State of the MLMUPC instructed the construction site owners to follow four technical standards including; 1) ensuring they use registered constructors and designers, 2) ensuring that the site has a standby constructor, engineers and workers, with closure resulting from a failure to comply, 3) having a map of the geographical area around where tower cranes are used daily, and 4) properly checking the type of soil in the area as some areas in Sihanoukville are muddy while others are rocky, which can cause construction failure like the recent collapse of the 7-storey building in Preah Sihanouk city.

Meanwhile, H.E Kuoch Chamroeun, Governor of Preah Sihanouk province, said some construction sites were not following proper technical standards, which poses a risk to workers and people.

He urged all construction site owners to be concerned about the safety and quality of their construction works in accordance with the laws of Cambodia.

The Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) recently published the entire contents of the new construction law following ratification by the National Assembly. (Read more)

The construction law also imposes a sentence of 15 years in prison for deaths on construction sites.
