MoE Recognises Over 90 Hectares of “Lower Tatai” in Koh Kong as Protected Area Community

The Ministry of Environment (MOE) has officially granted recognition to the “Lower Tatai” protected area community, spanning an impressive 97.3 hectares. Nestled within the pristine confines of the Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary, the “Ta Tai Krom” Protected Area Community encompasses the idyllic landscapes of Anlong Vak Village and Koh Andet Village in Ta Tai Krom commune, Koh Kong district, Koh Kong province.

Prakas No. 290, issued on 19 July 2023, officially recognises this community, underscoring the efforts of the “Sustainability of Cambodia’s Landscape and Eco-Tourism” project in its coordination and conservation endeavours.

The establishment of the “Lower Tatai” Protected Area Community is a pivotal step towards fostering sustainable management and utilisation of natural resources while enhancing the livelihoods of local communities in alignment with the government’s visionary policies.

As part of this initiative, the community development within the protected area will adhere to statutory guidelines and management plans, adhering steadfastly to the law on protected areas.

The Cambodian Sustainable Landscape and Ecotourism Sustainability Project (CSLEP) serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable tourism development. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Rural Development and backed by World Bank funding, the project aims to enhance the management of protected areas and promote ecotourism opportunities, fostering the value chain of non-timber forest products across the Cardamom and Tonle Sap landscape.

Presently, the project extends support to 30 natural communities spread across seven target provinces, namely Koh Kong, Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, Kampong Thom, and Siem Reap.
