MoE urges to establish a seabed national park in Kep province

The Ministry of Environment (MoE) is studying the establishment of a seabed national park in Kep to become a new tourist resort and attract more tourists, as Cambodia already has two seaside national parks. This was stated by HE Net Pheaktra, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment on August 30, 2022.

He said that at the request of the Kep Provincial Administration, the Ministry of Environment is continuing to study the seabed national park project because the area is rich in natural resources, including seagrass, coral, sea pigs, and dolphins.

A national park is a natural area on land or water that is designated to protect one or more local ecosystems for the benefit of all generations.

“The area also has levels of use that could damage or destroy biodiversity, natural resources, cultural resources, and the role of the area,” he said.

As of August 2022, Cambodia has 76 biodiversity conservation areas as protected areas and biodiversity corridors with a total area of ​​7.3 million hectares, equivalent to 41% of the country’s land area. (Read more)

Among these protected areas and biodiversity corridors, there are 73 protected areas, including 1). National Park 10 areas 2). 19 wildlife sanctuary areas 3). 14 landscape protection areas 4). Multiple use areas 10 areas 5). Ramsa 5 area 6). 13 natural heritage sites and 7). Two marine national park areas.
