Enhancing Worker Safety: MOLVT Launches Strategies to Safeguard Construction Workers in Cambodia

In a significant move to protect the well-being of workers, especially those in the construction industry, the MOLVT has introduced the third master plan on occupational safety and health for the period 2023-2027. The plan encompasses various sectors, including textiles, garments, footwear, bags, and travel products, as well as agricultural and construction activities.

During the announcement of the master plan on July 11, 2023, at the prestigious Phnom Penh Hotel, Mr. Sam Soeun, President of the National Council of Trade Unions, emphasized the importance of integrating occupational safety and health practices into vocational training programs. This integration is crucial in shaping a generation of skilled workers who prioritize safety and enjoy improved occupational health.

The third master plan serves as a comprehensive framework to address policy matters, establish priorities, and implement necessary measures aimed at ensuring occupational safety and health for workers. By reducing work-related accidents and enhancing productivity across various industries, this plan aims to create a safer and more efficient working environment for both employers and workers.

Highlighting the significance of the plan, HE Dr. Ith Sam Heng, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, outlined six key strategies and detailed action plans with specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) indicators. These strategies aim to enhance cooperation, efficiency, and effectiveness in promoting occupational safety and health across all economic sectors, irrespective of the size of the enterprise or workplace.

The launch of this master plan underscores Cambodia’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of construction workers and other labor force members. By implementing robust strategies and fostering a culture of safety, the country aims to elevate the standards of worker protection, enhance productivity, and contribute to sustainable development.
