MPWT: Covid-19 issue does not affect Cambodia’s road development projects

The recent Covid-19 issue does not affect the development of Cambodia’s roads financed by the People’s Republic of China.

This statement was made by H.E. Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport during an interview with the press at the inauguration ceremony for National Road 55 and the ground-breaking ceremony of National Road 10 on the morning of 9 March 2020.

“The problem of Covid-19 has not been an obstacle to road development in Cambodia since the project team has long been in Cambodia, so there is no delay in the construction of any project,” said the minister.

“The National Road 10 and the Kratie bridge project is still ongoing, and we have submitted (the project) in our five-year plan and are waiting for the Ministry of Economy and Finance to propose it to Prime Minister Hun Sen. So, there is no delay so far” he continued.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on 9 March 2020 that China had financed the construction of more than 3,000km of roads in the kingdom, which includes the recent inauguration of NR 55 with a total length of 180km and the ground-breaking of NR 10 with a total length of 198km.

However, on 4 March, Samdech Techo Hun Sen asked government ministries and relevant institutions to reduce expenses and allocating them for combating the Covid-19 outbreak.
