Norway Commits USD 1.2 Million to Mine Action Support in Cambodia

The Norwegian government has officially announced a significant new initiative to support mine action efforts in Cambodia, pledging a budget of USD 1.2 million for the period from 2025 to 2027. The grant was formalized during a signing ceremony held today, attended by Ms. Astrid Emilie Helle, the Norwegian Ambassador to Cambodia, and H.E. Ly Thuj, Senior Minister and First Deputy Chairman of the Cambodian Mine Action Authority, representing Prime Minister Hun Manet.

During the ceremony, H.E. Ly Thuj praised Norway, referring to the country as more than just a donor; he emphasized the longstanding partnership that has flourished over the past three decades in tackling the critical issues of landmines and explosive remnants of war in Cambodia.

“The collaboration between Norway and Cambodia has yielded significant progress in addressing these dangerous remnants of conflict,” said H.E. Thuj, underscoring the importance of continued international support.

Ambassador Helle commended the progress made in mine action and acknowledged Cambodia’s successful hosting of the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World under the Ottawa Convention in 2024. She reaffirmed Norway’s dedication to assisting Cambodia in its goal of becoming free from mines and explosive remnants of war.

Additionally, on October 2, 2025, the Cambodian Mine Action Authority, alongside the National Center for the Management of Peacekeeping Forces in Mine Action and Explosive Remnants of War, signed a separate agreement to clear 453 minefields across several provinces, including Banteay Meanchey and Battambang. This initiative has been allocated a budget of USD 5 million, further illustrating Cambodia’s commitment to overcoming the legacy of landmines and ensuring safety for its citizens.

As these initiatives unfold, the international community looks forward to Cambodia’s progress towards a safer, mine-free future, while Norway’s steadfast support underscores its role as a critical partner in this ongoing humanitarian effort.
