Phnom Penh goes green: More than 400 green projects logged in Q4 2019

With the ultimate goal of building a more sustainable city, a number of real-estate developers have been moving toward greener projects, with 405 net green projects recorded in Phnom Penh in Q4 of 2019, according to CBRE Cambodia.

According to a report released by CBRE on 16 January, those green projects include hotels, retails, offices, apartments, condominiums, and others. Condominiums stand on the top half of the list, with approximately 120 projects.

These green projects are spread out across all the districts in Phnom Penh. However, Boeng Keng Kang area hosts the most projects, at approximately 18%, followed by Toul Kork and Chamkarmon, which account for 14% and 13%, respectively.

A green project refers to any building that, in its design, construction, and operation, can help reduce negative impact, and yet create positive effects on our climate and environment. In other words, a building that preserves natural resources, but improves our quality of life.

Regarding the green perspective and sustainable city, Phnom Penh is rated as one of the cities with the lowest number of green areas per capita in the ASEAN region, accounting for only 1.1 square metres per person. (Read more)

In response, the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction and the Ministry of Environment have recently called for project owners and developers of residential building projects to consider the principle of establishing green spaces in their projects. (Read more)

According to legal principles, all development projects need 30% of their footprint as green space. This 30% is the remaining area after the building area of the project.
