Preah Sihanoukville set to become sustainable national development hub

Based on the 2030 vision of Urban Planning, the Cambodian government has set Preah Sihanoukville province as a sustainable national development hub in the country’s coastal area, as province booms with investment and tourists.

The urban planning report states that Preah Sihanoukville province will be a hub of a modern city, a world’s beautiful beach resort, a multi-purpose special economic zone, international gateway, and national entertainment centre.

The province will also be developed to become a national logistics centre with connections to ASEAN markets and the world and a modern technology industry centre with harmonisation for better living standards for the people, according to the report.

The purpose of the development is based on the potential of the economy, the beach and coastline, and policies on main sectors of the government.

“With the potential of the beach important to Cambodia’s economy, the Royal Government of Cambodia has renovated and expanded the Preah Sihanoukville Autonomous Port which is the sole seaport in Cambodia and the Kang Keng International Airport to become a modern international gateway and efficiency for linking markets to the world,” the report read.

With special conditions differentiating it from other provinces, Preah Sihanoukville province has the physical infrastructure – with main roads, railway, airport, and waterways – which are the main factors in attracting investment.

Sin Chanserey Vutha, a spokesperson at State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, said that Preah Sihanoukville province will become a main international airport hub in Cambodia once the expansion and renovation project at the airport in the province is finished.

“When the runway construction of 3,300 metres long is finished allowing long haul aircraft to land and take off, it will become the main airport in the country,” Mr Vutha said.
