Sihanoukville Port Expansion Project Phase 1 Postponed to Mid-2022

The construction of Sihanoukville port expansion project phase 1, which was first scheduled to begin this year, will now be postponed to mid-2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a senior official at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.

The Administrative Director of the Project Management Unit of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port Sokkoul Chenda recently told Cambonomist that besides the COVID-19 disruption, the team are revising the design once again.

The design of this phase project was first completed in July 2020, with the expansion including increasing the depth of the port to 14.7m and building a new container terminal. The project will be implemented with a Japanese fund of over US$200 million. (Read more)

According to the 2020-2030 plan, the Sihanoukville seaport expansion project has a total of five phases.

Upon completion of the first phase, supposedly by 2023-2024, the port can accommodate large container vessels with a capacity of up to 60,000 tons, or 93% of the total number of vessels in the Asia-Pacific region.

In the meantime, the Cambodian government is also opening opportunities for development partners to study the second and third phases as well by expending the depth to 16 metres and 17.50 metres respectively. According to HE Sun Chanthol, JICA is also studying these phases.  (Read more)

For the long term, the government will also expand the port to 18.5 and 19 metres in the fourth and fifth phases.

Regarding the port enhancement, the Japanese government earlier this month also decided to provide another grant aid of approximately US$10.8 million to Cambodia to develop and enhance the vessel traffic system (VTS) at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. (Read more)
