Singapore converts Changi Exhibition Centre to the community isolation facility

Singapore has converted the Changi Exhibition Centre into a community isolation facility to treat COVID-19 patients, as the country becomes Asia’s most infected nation after China and India.

A former Singapore Airshow venue, the Changi Exhibition Centre (CEC) is now being used as a community isolation facility with an indoor capacity of 33,000 square meters which can house about 2,700 patients and an additional 75,000 square meters as part of an outdoor space under construction which will be able to house another 4,400 patients. The center accepted its first 50 patients on 25 April 2020.

The center becomes Singapore’s third community isolation facility besides D’Resort NTUC in Pasir Ris (which can receive 500 patients) and the Singapore Expo (which can receive about 1000 patients).

Each room in the center can receive eight to 10 patients and is equipped with Wi-Fi access, fans, beds, and storage cabinets. Outdoor laundry, shower, and toilet facilities are available in a limited zone, where both patient and staff with protective gear are permitted entry.

On 27 April 2020, 799 new cases were confirmed bringing the total number of COVID-19 patients in Singapore to 11,863 cases. These patients are being isolated and treated at community facilities. So far, Singapore has reported 1,095 recovered cases, according to the official Singapore government website.
