Singapore Pledges to Continue Cooperation on Enhancing Logistics System in Cambodia

Cambodia and Singapore have committed to expanding cooperation on logistic infrastructure system, to help Cambodia become one of the most competitive trade centres in the region.

The commitment was made during an official meeting between Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol and new Singapore Ambassador Cambodia HE Teo Lay Cheng on 11 May.

HE Teo Lay Cheng stated that Singapore intends to continue strengthening and expanding cooperation with Cambodia in all sectors, especially on the transportation and logistics infrastructure system.

Thus far, Singapore has provided significant assistance to the transportation sector in Cambodia, for instance, the recently-signed US$200-million Phnom Penh Logistics Complex (PPLC).

The cooperation framework agreement of the project was signed on 4 March between the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and two Singaporean firms YCH and Infrastructure Asia (IA). (Read more)

HE Sun Chanthol said that the PPLC will play a significant role in enhancing Cambodia’s logistic system. It will serve as a centre for the distribution network and as a connecting point for all types of transportations either by land, rail, water and air.

YCH Group Chairman Robert Yab once said that Cambodia is a high potential investment destination.

“Cambodia’s logistics infrastructure is not that well developed today, which is why many multinational companies’ distribution centres are in other countries such as Thailand or Vietnam,” Mr Yab explained.

“Having consulted some of our customers running supply chains in ASEAN, I think they would put their distribution facilities in Cambodia if the country were to have a world-class standard of infrastructure. So, this is an opportunity for Cambodia to be in the game,” he added. (Read more)

Under the cooperation with the Singaporean government, Cambodia has also successfully achieved plenty of projects including the national automation system for vehicle registration, driver’s license issuance, driver’s license examination, vehicle technical inspection system, among others.
