Canada to Establish Embassy in Phnom Penh, Strengthening Diplomatic & Trade Ties

Canada has announced plans to open an embassy in Phnom Penh, aiming to enhance its long-standing relationship with Cambodia and expand trade cooperation between the two nations. This decision was confirmed during a working meeting between PM Hun Manet and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau on 10 October 2024 in Vientiane, Laos.

PM Trudeau informed Hun Manet of Canada’s intention to establish the embassy soon, marking a significant step in deepening diplomatic engagement. He also revealed plans to send a trade delegation to Cambodia to further promote bilateral trade and explore new opportunities for economic collaboration.

In response, PM Hun Manet welcomed the initiative, noting the progress in Cambodia-Canada relations, which have made Canada the seventh-largest bilateral trade partner of Cambodia. He acknowledged Canada’s contributions to Cambodia’s socio-economic development, particularly in job creation and professional training for Cambodian youth.

PM Hun Manet also highlighted recent initiatives, including a trade fair held in Montreal and the upcoming opening of a Cambodian embassy in Canada, underscoring the growing momentum in bilateral ties. These efforts signal a mutual commitment to fostering stronger connections in diplomacy, trade, and development for the benefit of both nations.
