MoE Initiates Green Recreation Initiatives in in Two Major Cambodia’s National Parks

The Ministry of Environment (MOE) is spearheading efforts to establish green recreation corridors in two of Cambodia’s cherished national parks: Preah Suramarit Kosomak “Kirirom” National Park in Kampong Speu province and Preah Jayavarman-Norodom “Phnom Kulen” National Park in Siem Reap. HE Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, unveiled these initiatives during meetings on 18 April and inspections on 21 April 2024.

Minister Sophalleth highlighted the significance of these projects in aligning with the MOE’s environmental chakra strategy, focusing on cleanliness, greenery, and sustainability. In Preah Suramarit Kosomak “Kirirom” National Park, the initiative aims to integrate Buddhist values, cultural heritage, and harmonious coexistence with nature into recreational activities, fostering peace of mind among visitors.

Meanwhile, the establishment of a green recreation corridor in Preah Jayavarman-Norodom “Phnom Kulen” National Park is geared towards promoting ecotourism fitness. Plans include constructing Khmer-style accommodations, pathways connecting communities, and facilitating eco-friendly modes of transportation such as walking or cycling. Additionally, local communities will be empowered to offer tourism services, enhancing economic opportunities while minimising environmental impact.

Preah Jayavarman-Norodom “Phnom Kulen” National Park already boasts 85 natural attractions, including waterfalls, ancient temples, and natural ponds. Additionally, the Ministry of Environment has established five community-protected areas within the Jayavarman-Norodom National Park “Phnom Kulen.” These include the Prey Thom Anlong Thom protected area community, Prey Thom community, Prey Peul community, Prey Phnom Kdouch community, Prey Phnom Mnas protected area community, and Chup Ta community protected area.

The MoE has previously undertaken significant infrastructure projects within Cambodia’s natural reserves. For instance, in Preah Jayavarman Phnom Kulen National Park, the ministry established a park ranger office, Kesor Kol shelter, and various amenities spanning 10 hectares. These initiatives are pivotal in ensuring the effective management and preservation of the park’s ecological treasures. (Read more)

Furthermore, Cambodia has made considerable strides in conservation efforts. As of 2020, the country boasts 57 protected areas and three mixed conservation corridors, including the Northeast and Cardamom Mountains. Encompassing a vast expanse of over 7.2 million hectares, these protected zones constitute a remarkable 41% of Cambodia’s land area. This underscores Cambodia’s steadfast commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable environmental stewardship.
