Over 80% Completion Milestone Achieved in Stung Prek Tnaot Rehabilitation Project

In a significant stride towards enhanced water resource management, the Stung Prek Tnaot Rehabilitation Project has successfully reached an impressive completion rate of 80.6%, as announced by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology on its official Facebook page on 17 February 2024.

Initiated to revitalise Stung Prek Tnaot in the lower region extending from the east of National Road 3, spanning Phnom Penh, Kandal, and Takeo provinces, the project encompasses three pivotal tasks. These include the rehabilitation of rivers and reinforcement of delta dams, the construction and repair of canals, and the creation of new rivers or canals.

After commencing construction on 8 January 2022, the Stung Prek Tnaot Rehabilitation Project is on a 40-month trajectory, with a projected completion date set for March 2025.

Upon reaching fruition, this comprehensive endeavour will fortify the Stung Prek Tnaot Irrigation & Flood Protection System. This robust system is designed to proactively prevent and mitigate floods emanating from Stung Prek Tnaot, safeguarding the regions of Phnom Penh, Kandal, Takeo, and Kampong Speu across an expansive area of 244 square kilometres.

The multifaceted benefits of this initiative extend beyond flood prevention, encompassing an augmented irrigation capacity covering 10,150 hectares of farmland in the dry season and 17,730 hectares during the rainy season. This not only supports agricultural sustainability but also ensures a more secure and abundant water supply. Additionally, the project aids in minimizing flooding in specific lower regions and contributes to the flourishing tourism sector.

Simultaneously, the revitalisation efforts extend to Prek Ho, a waterway spanning over 7 kilometres. The concrete pouring activities are underway, with a targeted stretch of 500 metres slated for completion. This holistic approach to water resource management underscores the commitment to sustainable development and environmental resilience.
